Looking for a skincare routine but don’t have the time or energy to research for more than 15 minutes? TikTok and its influencers have your back! This app has taken Gen Z by storm with over 1 billion users. Even those who refuse to download the app likely see the short clips on other social media platforms in the form of “reels.”
Companies have begun advertising their skincare lines through social media. Skincare TikTok (what users call the TikTok videos that advertise skincare products) has people like you and me, skin experts, and even dermatologists and doctors speaking about skincare and beauty. It has a significant outreach, with 198,800 to 3,900,000 followers for TikTok’s dermatologists.
There are videos where users are reviewing other users’ skincare routines, following skincare trends like the slugging trend, and even 30-second lectures with music in the background to make it not seem like a lecture. From a Gen Z’s perspective, I’m going to give you the top five most-followed skinfluencers on Skincare TikTok that you have to check out.
1. Muneeb Shah (@Dermdoctor)
@dermdoctor
Dr. Muneeb Shah is a dermatologist who takes an influencer route during his off time. He creates TikToks of tips for a good skincare routine, reviews other people’s skin and skincare routines, and gives a 101 on specific ingredients that will make your skin look flawless. His 14.7 million followers, me included, can and will explain all the benefits of retinol. If you want to learn about the science behind how beneficial niacinamide is for your skin, watch some of Dr. Shah’s TikToks (or read our Ingredients 101 article on niacinamide here).
2. Hyram Yarbro (@Hyram)
@hyram
Hyram Yarbro’s TikToks consists of informational videos on specific products, reviewing celebrities and his followers’ skincare routines, and fun and trendy videos relating to skincare. Hyram is a skincare expert that started his career off of YouTube discussing different ingredients and creating reviews. Now, with 6.3 million followers on TikTok, he uses his platform to educate. If you are looking for products like a new cleanser or moisturizer for your specific skin type, take ten seconds to watch one of Hyram’s TikToks.
3. Dr. Dustin Portela (@208skindoc)
@208skindoc
Do you want a simplified but thorough explanation on your products? Spend some time on Dr. Dustin Portela’s page. He is a dermatologist who also uses his degree to create informative yet easy to understand TikToks. He will explain the ingredients, test products, review user’s skincare routines, explain the how-to’s of skincare, and dish the latest trends to ensure his 2.1M followers are satisfied with the products they purchase. Trust me, you will be smarter and perfect your routine after you watch his TikToks.
4. Young Yuh (@Yayayayoung)
@yayayayoung
If you are looking for perfect glass skin, Young Yuh is your man. He is an “Egg looking straight skincare specialist” (his words, not mine) that lets his personality shine through as he casually teaches you about the how to’s of skincare and the ingredients and products you need in your routine. Before creating Young Yuh’s TikTok account on March 2020, he was already working and marketing in the beauty industry. Now, just make sure you’re not watching his videos during class because you’re going to laugh. His 1.7 million followers agree. Merry skincare!
5. Vi Lai (@WhatsOnVisFace)
@whatsonvisface
If you don’t feel like spending $500 on skincare, then Vi Lai’s TikTok’s got you covered. Vi Lai originally made a TikTok just because she was bored and now with her skincare videos, has garnered 900.7K followers. She combines skin care tips and tricks with some dark humor, which is the perfect combination for the Gen Z population. She will make you laugh and remind you that sunscreen is your bestie.
Honorable mention: Jenny Bauer (@BauerBeauty)
@bauerbeauty
If you need some advice on how to combat your adult acne, check out some of Jenny Bauer’s TikToks. Bauer is a licensed esthetician who takes her struggle with acne to help you find the best products. In her TikToks, she takes her 344.3K followers along with her to a store to bash and recommend products as well as explain the formation and healing process of acne. Bauer will make you rethink your products.
Conclusion:
Skincare TikTok has opened doors for many people to share their ideas as well as to learn and gain new insight. With only a max time limit of three minutes, these creators can inform their users on the topic of skin and beauty in a relatable and fun fashion. Go to Skincare TikTok and immerse yourself into a world of products, ingredients, reviews, etc. And remember: Wear your sunscreen!
