Remember that comforting, childhood sweet treat that brought joy not only because of its taste but also because of its fun, jiggly texture? Now, imagine that very sweet treat pushing its way into the skincare industry. Well, to be clear, we’re just talking about the name, not the actual product…no need to apply Jello to your skin! Thanks to Tiktoker Ava Lee, the term “Jello Skin” has now gone viral.
What is Jello Skin?
The concept of “Jello Skin” is originally derived from Korea where it is known as “Taeng Taeng.” While there is no official translation for this term, Ava Lee’s personal translation is “Jello skin,” to reflect the resemblance that elastic skin has compared to the consistency of the well-known sweet treat.
“Jello Skin” is used to describe skin that feels bouncy and elastic. Do you have “Jello Skin?” You can self-“diagnose” by gently pressing or rubbing your face and observing if your skin seems to quickly bounce back into place. On Ava Lee’s Tiktok, her esthetician rubs her face showing the elasticity of Ava’s skin and resemblance to the properties of the old childhood favorite treat.
Achieving and Maintaining Jello Skin
How do you achieve “Jello Skin?” Well, those with “Jello Skin” likely have healthy collagen levels. Collagen, the most prominent protein in the body, plays a crucial role in achieving youthful-looking skin by acting as a support structure, keeping skin plump and giving it a bouncy feel. Unfortunately, as we age, our natural collagen levels decrease. So, in order to achieve “Jello Skin” you really need to work from the inside out, supporting the body’s collagen levels through diet and with good skincare products. In fact, Ava Lee describes this as a lifestyle, requiring discipline to be able to achieve that Jelly-like consistency.
A diet high in collagen from foods like bone broth, meats, and eggs will help maintain healthy levels of the protein and support smooth skin. If you are not a meat lover, no need to worry! There are lots of collagen supplements that you can take instead. In addition, antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Retinol help with collagen production so supplements or topical products containing these ingredients can be very helpful. To help reduce skin swelling, an anti-inflammatory diet consisting of foods such as avocados, apples, turmeric, etc. is key.
Keeping skin hydrated is also very important in achieving a plumped look. Hydrating products may include serums or face masks but it doesn’t all need to be topical! Even drinking a good amount of water during the day can help hydrate the skin. Adding facial massages, like Gua Sha, when applying serums may also help to achieve “Jello Skin” since it supports lymphatic drainage, leaving your skin more structured. So, if you’re looking to support your “Jello Skin” or you want to get to that state, try implementing a few of these tips into your daily routine for beautiful, bouncy skin…no Jello required.
