4 Reasons Why You Need a Skincare Fridge (and 1 reason why you don’t)!
Share
Yes, it’s gimmicky and cool, both literally and figuratively! While mini-fridges are not a new concept for food/wine enthusiasts, these cute refrigerators have been repositioned for storing skin care lotions, mists, and masks! So, could “chilled beauty” be the next big thing? Who knows…in today’s world of IG and TikTok challenges, don’t be surprised if trends defy your beliefs and rationale!
Benefits of “chilled beauty” products
#1 – Some notoriously unstable ingredients like Vitamin C can last longer in the fridge as it offers a cool, dark and dry storage place. While there are newer, stable products in the marketplace (like BeautyStat Universal C Skin Refiner – Serum for Face, 20% Pure L-Ascorbic Acid), if you fancy the fresh pressed-type products (Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster with Pure Vitamin C) then a “cool” fridge could help keep the product “fresh” for a longer period.
#2 – If you have itchy skin, bug bites, eczema or dermatitis, a soothing sensation can calm the nerves. For those who’ve had a laser procedure or a dermabrasion or peel treatment, a refrigerated sheet mask may help to soothe skin and reduce redness.
#3 – The cooling sensation of skincare products like eye cream or undereye hydrogel patches could help with puffiness around the eyes.
#4 – If you are the DIY type or you believe in natural, organic, “clean” skincare with no/low preservatives, a skincare fridge may be able to preserve your products for a bit longer.
What to look for when buying a skincare mini-fridge
Size and Portability – Don’t be duped by the word “mini-fridge”! Make sure to check the dimensions before any purchase to ensure that it will fit on your dresser, counter, desk or wherever you plan to keep it. If you are a traveler or you often change your home decor, there are travel-friendly, lightweight and easy ergonomic options with handles. Some even come with a car charger!!
Temperature – Temperature is key as this feature will dictate the functionality of the fridge. Some refrigerators come with dual functions – cooling and warming. The cooling temperature could vary between 30F-45F (-1C to 7C) whereas the warming function could go as high as 150F (65C).
If you would like to check out mini-fridges available on the marketplace, some of the most reviewed ones are – NXONE Mini Fridge Cooler Warmer and Compact Refrigerator, Finishing Touch Flawless Mini Beauty Fridge, Mini Fridge Portable Beauty Fridge for Skincare (Mirror & LED Design).
Buyers beware…
Not all products are made for fridges. While products like eye creams, mists, undereye patches and sheet masks are the most likely candidates, some product types will become thicker and could “break” if the temperature is too low. Temperatures lower than room temperature but above freezing should be OK, and perhaps anything between 40-60F (4-15C). DO NOT FREEZE your products – let that function be just for your ice creams not your eye creams!
What’s ONE reason why not to have a skincare fridge?
A skincare fridge makes sense when you have plenty of shelf space on your vanity table, passion for skincare and a real skin need. If any of these are questionable, perhaps you can give your regular refrigerator a try before venturing into the mini cool zone.
